Toward the end of 2009 my husband started learning about medicinal herbs and realized that some of the old "folk" cures may, in fact, be better than many of the pharmaceutical alternatives to which we've been accustomed. Our medical system is best-suited for acute health problems but offers little for those seeking preventative care or with chronic health problems. He soon poured his time into learning about herbs and how they might be beneficial.
I knew we had an excellent diet by most standards. Even our doctor has commented that we eat healthier than almost all of his patients. However, as I continued to learn, I discovered that eating was only part of our health picture. Our skin is permeable and what we put on it, many times, gets absorbed into our bodies. That's why a medical patch works.
As a woman, I use make-up but I really had no idea what was in those products. I began to read the labels of the skin products I used. The results were not pretty. I was surprised by what I found. For example, my shampoo was highly toxic. It's ingredients increased the permeability of my skin to nearly 100% easily allowing its harmful chemicals to enter my body. Checking the labels of other products I used gave the same result. More toxic chemicals!
All this label reading presented a new problem. Most labels read like a college chemistry book. What was this substance? What does it do? Has it been tested? Delving into the subject I discovered that many of the chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and skin care products have toxic tendencies. Then it hit me. What was the point of eating the most nutritional food I could find and yet cover my skin with these chemicals every day? (I'd encourage you to buy A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients and look up what you are using.)
